Most problems are husbandry problems. Prevention beats treatment.
Get their environment right and these are hardy animals. The trade is where the risks creep in. So this covers the big welfare decision when you buy, how I quarantine a new arrival, the ailments to watch for, and when it's time to stop guessing and call a vet.
Wild-caught vs captive-bred
The single biggest welfare factor with this species is where the animal came from. Most emerald tree skinks in the trade are still wild-caught.
Wild-caught (WC)
- Arrive stressed, dehydrated and underweight
- Very commonly carry internal parasites
- Often skittish and slow to settle
- Higher early mortality
- Removes animals from wild populations
Captive-bred (CB)
- Healthier, better hydrated, feeding reliably
- Far lower parasite load
- Calmer, acclimated to captivity
- Known age and often known parentage
- No impact on wild populations
Parasitology backs this up for the species specifically. Two coccidian parasites, Eimeria nuiailan and Eimeria auffenbergi, were described from emerald tree skinks collected in Papua New Guinea and the Philippines, and before that work there were no coccidian records from this skink at all (McAllister et al. 2013). Treat any imported animal as carrying something until a vet says otherwise.
Quarantine new arrivals
- House new animals separately for at least 30–60 days (longer for WC) before any contact with existing reptiles.
- Use a simple, easy-to-clean setup during quarantine so you can monitor droppings and appetite.
- Get a fecal exam from a reptile vet; treat parasites before the animal joins its permanent home.
- Handle quarantined animals last and wash hands/tools between enclosures.

Daily & weekly health checks
- Daily: is it alert, evenly coloured, basking and moving normally? Any laboured breathing?
- At feeding: is the appetite normal? Body firm and rounded, not sunken or bloated?
- Weekly: check droppings, watch weight trend, look for retained shed on toes/tail.
- A gram scale is the best early-warning tool, steady weight loss is often the first sign of trouble.
- Know the normal. Normal basking posture, normal appetite, normal colour. A dull, greyish animal that usually looks bright green is worth a closer look.
- Log conditions, not impressions. Temperature and humidity readings at animal height tell you what a thermostat dial cannot. Mine are logged automatically, which is the point of the Home Assistant setup.
Prevention checklist
- Correct UVB, replaced on schedule.
- Correct basking temperature verified with a probe, on a thermostat.
- Humidity cycling 60–80% with good airflow.
- Varied, gut-loaded, correctly supplemented diet.
- Guarded heat/UVB fixtures, no contact burns.
- Quarantine + fecal testing for every new animal.
- Clean water and spot-cleaning; full clean on a regular cycle.
